The need for an Autism Service Dog came about when our Little E first wandered away from our home. That day was our initiation into the autistic term "elopement." Also known as wandering or bolting. Previously, it was an unknown term to us, but now it is a part of our every day reality. Having an autistic child that is prone to wander and non-verbal creates a very high level stress for us at all times. We have researched many options, but landed on an Autism Service Dog as the solution. Little E's service dog will be trained to track her scent should she wander away again, be tethered to her in public situations, and bark or "tattle" if she begins to climb a fence or tree. There are many other benefits that come with an Autism Service Dog, but they honestly feel like icing on the cake compared to the HUGENESS of the things mentioned above.
